Macs and Adobe CS
The reason your friend finds that CS runs smoother under OSX than it does under Windows has more to do with hardware than the software.
As far as I’m aware OSX has better OpenCL/GL support meaning that the GPU is taking some of the strain under OSX. On Win7 however this kind of acceleration is only available for nVidia GPUs, which Macs do not have. So by running Win7 under bootcamp you are losing some performance.
I can assure you though that with an nvidia card Photoshop and the like are very very smooth.
To each their own though, it’s not the tools it’s the user! If you want (and can afford) a Mac, get one. If you can’t afford one try Samsung’s series 7 notebooks, or Lenovo’s ThinkPad T-series (they have the same specs, without the added price). If you can afford a Mac but know that you’ll be using a lot of autodesk software check out Lenovo’s ThinkPad W-series (which I use, and love), they pack a Quadro GPU and 4 memory slots, fantastic for heavy loads.
