Tips for Architecture School

#53 We are all in the same situation, Share the Sandbox.
One of the nice things about design school is the values, situations, and experiences you gain while enduring the wrath of studio.  Studio culture is one of the main building blocks for your development as a designer.  The phrase “Share the sandbox” is really just a metaphor for sharing your things, space, and opinions with others in the workplace.  I think that some people are more private than others, but I have seen that some studios become too private and sometimes HOSTILE!  When you are working in a firm one day, you will need to know the value of sharing and it can really help to act as part of a team than an individual.
I am not saying parade around giving away free protractors and pencils, but be mindful of your surroundings, help each other when in need, and remember we are all here for the same reason.
* For those of you in the back of your head are saying “well some people abuse how nice I am and try to bum stuff all the time”, just be honest with people.  If I notice someone is taking too much from me, I just tell them the truth, that I am getting pretty low on materials and I feel like they’re taking advantage of me.  You can never sculpt other people’s reactions or feelings, but when there is an uncomfortable situation afoot, it is always best to just be honest and up front with people.

#38 Don’t be afraid to share things
Society is getting much more privatized over time, and even though communication is now easier than ever, people are less likely to share with each other.  I have seen entire classes of people block-off their desks and hide all of their work, in fear that their “original ideas” will be stolen.  I do understand the power of an idea, and at a certain point, yes, it might be a good thing to keep it to yourself if you think the invention could possibly bring you great fortune.
This private way of living in the studio, however, is not conducive to a healthy studio environment.  You should learn from one another, help each other, and teach each other.  I am not saying you should go around copying each other, because individuality is a great part of the archi school environment, but talking to each other and sharing things will allow a great bond between peers, and allow one idea to be divided up and utilized in numerous ways, spawning innovation in different directions.
This is especially important when first starting out.  Many of us have no clue what we are doing.  Use your peers, ask questions, provide answers, and most of all just share things.  You never know when someone will give you that extra nudge in the right direction.
